Musings of a Chicago Web Developer

Sincerely

I just finished writing a bunch of thank you letters for the interviews I had the other day. Somehow, it took me about 2 hours to write them?! They’re a pain to write at first, trying to think of the proper things to say and not say; but once they were done, I felt great about it! At the lunch the other day, I asked the people who work there what would be one tip they would give to graduates who are starting out their careers. And one dude answered, “When you get home after your interview, write a thank you letter.” He stressed that although that’s an obvious answer, not many people really follow through on it. So, you are already standing out if you do send one in. And it’s also just proper courtesy. And it is another opportunity to put in additional points about yourself that you missed in the interview. I mean, really, how can you NOT write a thank you note? There are just so much more benefits than drawbacks (other than the effort) for writing them.

My only gripe: multiple interviews with the same company. My thank you notes all pretty much sound the same, so I hope they all don’t start comparing my letters. It might make me look like I’m copying off of a template or something—and I don’t, it took me like over an hour to compose one!
